December 20 Devotion - Immanuel: God with us

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Maryam was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Maryam your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel which is translated, “God with us.”
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25
and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.

Words in oblique type in the New Testament are quoted from the Old Testament. At that time Jesus spoke Aramaic. In Aramaic His mother’s name is Maryam.

Matthew 1:18-25

When the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and made God's plan clear, Joseph was obedient. He didn’t request to understand how all of this was going to unfold.

Many times, I find myself in a situation where I don't know what to do. I should pray and ask guidance from the Lord. Although I don’t expect God to speak to me through an angel; like He did with Joseph; I believe that through prayer and meditation and being open to hear God’s guidance, He will speak to me through His Holy Word, The Holy Spirit, or through Godly people He may use. My responsibility is to listen and obey.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself, your friends and family:

Abba Father, thank You for loving us so much that You gave Your only begotten Son JESUS, to be our ‘Immanuel’. Heavenly Father fill me with joy through the many lessons I have learned from the story of the birth of our Saviour. Help me to read Your Word and listen as You give me the answers to life's difficult questions. In this festive season of celebrating the birth of our Saviour, give me a faith equal to that of Maryam and Joseph and direct me to trust You and follow Your will. Lord may Jesus be born into my heart and the hearts of all my friends and family and may everyone be saved and come unto the knowledge of the truth because that is Your desire, Lord.  1 Timothy 2:4 Thank You Father God for Your deep and everlasting love, thank You for Your abundant blessings in my life, and for the riches of Your grace upon my life. Abba Father, I worship You, praise You, I glorify You, I lift You up on high and I rejoice in Your grace. I declare Jesus as my Lord and Saviour and I pray in His holy name. To Jesus be the power, the glory, the majesty, the blessings, and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus loves you,

In Him,

December 19 Devotion - My soul magnifies The Lord

“My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
48 For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. 49 For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. 50 And His mercy is on those who fear Him From generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty. 54 He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy, 5 As He spoke to our fathers,  To Abraham and to his seed forever.

 Luke 1: 46-55

* Jesus spoke Aramaic. In Aramaic, His mother’s name is Maryam.

Maryam’s psalm of praise reveals a repeated use of the terminology and theology of the Old Testament. It is obvious that Maryam was very well versed in the Old Testament and accordingly her hymn demonstrates that.

Maryam’s praise begins with her grateful response to the grace God has shown to her, a humble servant of the Lord. Maryam does not in any way view herself as better or holier than anyone else. She views herself as the Lord’s servant, whose humble estate is the occasion for His mercy and grace. There is no hint that she thinks God has chosen her to be the mother of the Messiah due to her blessedness, but that her blessedness is the result of God’s sovereign and gracious choice to use her as His instrument.

Maryam saw her blessing as but an illustration, one instance of God’s grace, which leads her to praise God for His grace to all those who fear Him, from one generation to generation. Maryam’s praise focuses on the faithfulness of God to His promises.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, please use me as one of Your instruments so that I may be blessed by Your sovereign and gracious choice. Help me Lord to learn from Maryam, the mother of Jesus, to see myself as Your servant and help me to feel joy in my spirit in my God my saviour.  Holy is Your name LORD. Thank You God for Your faithfulness to Your promises. Thank You Father God for Your abundant blessings and inseparable love. Lord, I join all the generations to call Maryam, mother of Jesus, as ‘blessed’. Lord, I praise You, I glorify You and I rejoice in Your grace. In the holy name of Jesus, Your only begotten Son, my Saviour, and Lord over my life, I pray to You Father. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.’ Ephesians 3:20-21

December 18 Devotion - " Let it be to me according to your word.”

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Maryam. (Her real name in Aramaic).  28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”

29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Maryam, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son and shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
3Then Maryam said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”
38 Then Maryam said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (Arabic verses at the end)

 Luke 1:26-38

How does Maryam respond to the word of God that was delivered to her by the angel Gabriel?

She knows she is hearing something beyond human capability. Her question, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” is prompted by wonderment and not by doubt. She immediately responds with faith and trust. Maryam's prompt response of "Yes" to the divine message is a model of faith for all believers.

Maryam believed God's promises even when they seemed impossible. She was full of grace because she trusted that what God said was true and would be fulfilled. She was willing and eager to do God's will, even though it could end up in her being stoned to death.

When God commands, He also gives the help, strength, and means to respond. We can either yield to His grace or resist and go our own way. Today, let us start/continue believing in God's promises and yielding to His grace.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, I pray that out of Your glorious riches You strengthen me with power through Your Spirit in my inner being, so that I can say the same words as Your maidservant Maryam; mother of our Lord Jesus and blessed among women; said in total faith: Let it be to me according to your word.” Thank You Father God for loving me with a deep and everlasting love, thank You for Your abundant blessings in my life, and for the riches of Your grace upon my life. I pray to You God in the name of Your precious Son; my Redeemer and Saviour; the Lord of my life, Jesus Christ. To Jesus be the power, the glory, the majesty, the blessings, and the dominion before all time and now and forevermore. Amen.

December 13 Devotion - Listening for God's Voice

But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Matthew 6:6

We need seclusion in order to effectively meditate. We learn this from Jesus’ actions, as He would go alone away from His disciples and spend time with The Father. We also learn it from His teachings. In teaching the disciples how to pray, Jesus told them to go into their rooms and close the door behind them. He knew that it was vital to take a break from the demands of life and spend time alone praying in order to truly commune with The Father.

Our world works against this need. We are captive to mobile phones, e-mails, social media and other technological advances which have brought us the blessing—and the curse—of constant communication.

At some point every day we need to turn off the TV, mobile phone, and computer, and simply listen for God’s voice. Our schedules will not surrender time easily however we need to put first things first, schedule our priorities and create a daily block of time for the Lord.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, thank You for Your abundant blessings and love. Lord, help me today and every day to set time aside to pray to You, commune with You and hear Your voice. Teach me Lord to make this a priority over the countless voices demanding my attention. Lord You are my teacher and guide, help me to stop, pray, listen, and hear Your voice distinctively today and every day. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray. To Jesus be the power, the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus loves you,

In Him,

December 12 Devotion - I am living in God's strength

Sometimes I feel weary but then God strengthens me according to His word. I realize that He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak and those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. I can do everything (that is in accordance with God’s will) through Christ who strengthens me. God is my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. I am therefore strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

Psalm 119:28, Isaiah 40:29,  Philippians 4:13, Psalm 46:1, Ephesians 6:10

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, I pray that out of Your glorious riches You strengthen me with power through Your Spirit in my inner being. Ephesians 3:16. LORD, You are my strength and my song; You are my salvation. I will trust and not be afraid. Isaiah 12:2  LORD You are my shield; my heart leaps for joy and I give thanks to You Lord in song. Isaiah 12:2. Lord, in my weakest moments, assure me that the power of Christ will rest upon me. I believe that when your grace abounds my weakness will be transformed into strength and I will soar like an eagle and I shall run and not be weary. I proclaim to the world that Jesus is my Lord and Saviour. To Him who is able to keep me from stumbling and to present me before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy, to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore. Amen. Jude 1:24-25

December 11 Devotion - When others mistreat us

We work [for our living], working hard with our own hands. When we are reviled (abused; attacked with evil words) and verbally abused, we bless. When we are persecuted, we take it patiently and endure.

1 Corinthians 4:12 AMP

Endurance is not just the ability to bear a hard thing; it is the ability to turn it into glory. We have all probably discovered that the hardest times to remember the basic truths of God’s Word are during periods of pain or difficulty. With the right attitude we can make it a habit to view every situation through the filter of God’s perspective.

And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose

Romans 8:28 AMP

If we believe that God will bring good out of the situation somehow, then pessimistic thinking finds no permanent home in our hearts. When we adopt the right attitude, over time, our emotions will gradually align with the truth. Let us always remember that the Lord will give us His perspective if we ask Him to.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, I pray that out of Your glorious riches You strengthen me with power through Your Spirit in my inner being, so that I can have Your divine perspective and the right attitude. Lord, please keep me away from discouragement, worry, and self-sufficiency. Father God, please help me to focus on You instead of my circumstances. I know that when I am hurting it does not mean that You do not care about me. Your promises are true Lord, and I am confident that You will change all my circumstances to work for Your glory and my good, joy and peace. Abba Father, thank You for Your unfailing, deep, everlasting, and steadfast love for me. Thank You Father for Your abundant blessings in my life, and for the riches of Your grace upon my life. I will rejoice in The Lord. In the name of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ I pray. To Jesus be the power, the glory, the majesty, and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Devotion December 5 - Strengthen me Lord

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy

Colossians 1:11

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Philippians 4:13

I will make them strong in the Lord, and they shall walk in his name,” declares the Lord.

Zechariah 10:12

He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:29-31

If you are like me, then you probably sometimes struggle with feelings of inadequacy in the face of a task that God has set in front of you. Inadequacy’s roots are fear of failure, fear of disappointing people and more importantly fear of disappointing God.

As believers we need to ask God to strengthen us through The Holy Spirit. The power of the Holy Spirit is the supernatural tool God has given to equip and enable us believers. The power of the Holy Spirit is to do the work God calls us to accomplish. God has given us a spirit of power, not of timidity- 2 Timothy 1:7

Serving others, loving our enemies, building up one another in the faith, sharing Christ, and exercising our spiritual gifts are possible only through the Holy Spirit’s power. We need The Holy Spirit’s support and power to live the Christian life, to be loving, kind, gentle, patient, joyous, self–controlled, and peaceful.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, Adonai, please guide me and strengthen me to change my ways so as to rely totally on Your wisdom and counsel through The Holy Spirit; whom You sent to me in the name of Jesus. LORD, I pray that out of Your glorious riches You strengthen me with power through Your Spirit in my inner being, so that Christ may dwell in my heart through faith for all endurance and patience with joy. I shall wait for You Lord to renew my strength to mount up with wings like eagles; to run and not be weary or faint and to do all things that are according to Your will through Christ’s strength. Thank You Father for Your abundant blessings and deep inseparable love. God I praise You, revere You, worship You, I stand in awe of You, I lift You up on high, and glorify Your holy name. I declare Jesus as my Lord and Saviour and I pray in His holy name. To Jesus be the power, the glory, the authority, the majesty, the blessings, and the dominion before all time, now, and forever. Amen.

In Him,

December 4 Devotion - Who is Jesus to you?

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,

“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.

 Matthew 16: 13-17

Many people think that Jesus was: A Prophet, a good teacher, a wise man who had powers. We hear rumblings from ‘The New Age’ followers that he was a man who managed to get in touch with his inner resources and was able to perform miracles because of that.

Jesus for me is:

  • The way, the truth, and the life. He is the only way to The Father God, John 14:6
  • The light of the world, The Son of God, Luke 22:70
  • He has all authority in heaven and on earth, Mathew 28:18
  • He had a sinless life, John 8:46
  • Jesus Christ has the power to forgive sins and provide everlasting life John 11:25, Luke 5:20-21
  • He is coming back Matthew 24:27-30
  • He is my Saviour and Lord over my Life

So the question begging an answer from you is: Who is Jesus to you?

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, I pray that out of Your glorious riches You strengthen me and spiritually energize me with power through Your Spirit in my innermost being and personality, so that I can always follow Jesus and be obedient to His teachings and be able to forgive, to love those who I find are hard to love, to submit to Your authority over my life, to get rid of all dissention, and anything that is displeasing to The Holy Spirit. Lord I pray that everyone will be able to know Jesus in the way You know Him God. Thank You Lord  for Your abundant blessings and Your deep, inseparable and everlasting love. Lord I praise You, glorify You and lift You up on high. Father, I pray to You in the name of Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour, to whom be honour, glory, majesty, authority, and power forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus loves you,

In Him,
