August 27 Devotion - Praying in The Name of Jesus

God's name is so often exalted in scripture. God’s name is a declaration of the greatness of His person. Consider these verses:

O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

Psalm 8:1

Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

Psalm 103:1

Jesus taught His disciples to pray, "Hallowed be thy name" Name in scripture represents the very essence of the person. Doing something in someone else's name has two implications:

First, you come by the authority of the other person.

Second, when you come in someone’s name, you come in his stead, as if the person who sent you was there himself.

Now, let's apply this to praying in the name of Jesus. What is the significance of this? First, it means that when we come to the Father, we come because Jesus sent us. We come to The Father in the authority of Jesus and we come in Jesus’ stead. It is not simply our own idea to speak to the God of heaven and earth.

Jesus said:

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

John 14:13-14

Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

John 16:23-24

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.

John 15:16

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6

The right we have to approach God is through the redeeming shed blood of Jesus Christ. The authority we have to ask requests from God is in the favour of the resurrected Christ.

For there is [only] one God, and [only] one Mediator between God and mankind, the Man Christ Jesus

1 Timothy 2:5

The Bible is very clear, we need to pray in the name of Jesus, and Jesus is the ONLY mediator/ intercessor between mankind and God.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, hallowed be Your name. I thank You because You have given me a mediator/intercessor between You and me, Your only begotten Son Jesus Christ and through Him I can come boldly to Your throne of grace, that I may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16. Thank You Lord that when I pray for anything (that is in accordance with Your will and character) in the name of Jesus You will give me, in Your perfect timing. Thank You God that Your unfailing, deep, inseparable, steadfast love for me endures forever. Thank You God for Your abundant blessings in my life, and for the riches of Your grace upon my life. Father God, I praise You, revere You, worship You, I stand in awe of You, and glorify Your holy name. I declare to the world that Christ is my Lord and Saviour and in His name I pray. To Jesus be the power, the glory, the majesty, and the dominion before all time, now, and forevermore. Amen.

August 26 Devotion - Walking in The Light

In the day when I cried out, You answered me, And made me bold with strength in my soul. When His lamp shone above and upon my head and by His light I walked through darkness; He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.

Psalm 138:3, Job 29:3, Luke 1:49

When we walk in the light of God's countenance, every outward comfort is increased, every trouble is diminished, and we pass cheerfully by this light through life. When we rely on His loving-kindness and truth through Jesus Christ, we will always find Him faithful to His word.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, thank You for Your abundant blessings. Thank You Lord for Your promise to guide me and to comfort me through the most difficult circumstances. In the day when I cried out to You God, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul. As I look back on my life, I see how You protected me God through the darkest hours and helped me walk in the light of Your countenance. I can boldly say that He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. LORD, I praise You, I thank You, and I glorify You, and I claim Your promises to continue to do great things for me and give me wisdom, strength, and peace. In Jesus’ Holy name I pray. Amen.

August 25 Devotion - Following God's Plan

“I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”

John 12:24

The statement that knowledge is power is in reality not a true statement because only applied knowledge is power. I have learnt a lesson and I need to apply it if I want the full power of what God is teaching me to be in my life. In writing these devotions, I am the first person to benefit.

It's good to be passionate, however I seem to be unhappy if things do not happen my way and I need to learn that I have to put my dreams on God’s altar.

Does this apply to you too? Are you frustrated because you're trying to force things to happen on your timetable? Sometimes we hold on to things so tightly, but I believe that when we put them on God’s alter, that's when God brings them to pass.

We have to remember, God already knows what we want and what we are in need of. He's the One who put those desires in us.

“Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.”

Matthew 6:8

We shouldn't be consumed by trying to make things happen. Instead, a greater act of faith is to be happy right where we are; to stay open and trust God because He has great and better plans in store.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, thank You for Your abundant blessings and Your unfailing, deep, inseparable, and everlasting love for me. Lord, teach me that You will give me the desires of my heart when I thank You consistently for directing my steps. I really need to learn this lesson. Lord, let this lesson go deep into my conscious and subconscious mind. Help me today to release my dreams, my desires, my "wants" like a seed falling to the ground and dying, and I know that in Your fertile plan I will receive Your desires for me which are so much better for me. I know that You have the best plan for my future, and I trust You to bring it to pass in my life. Lord, I praise You, glorify You, and I lift You up on high. I declare Jesus as my Lord and Saviour and I pray in His holy name. To Jesus be the power, the glory, the majesty, the blessings, and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

August 23 Devotion - Wise Relationships

Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the LORD, saying, 'The LORD is witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.' “Then David left, and Jonathan went back to the town.

1 Samuel 20:42

Our past experiences influence our ability in building trusting relationships with others. If we have been hurt before, we may be less likely to open our hearts again. While there is always the risk of rejection which is very painful, I believe that finding a relationship that is based on genuine trust, devotion and loyalty is worth the risk. As believers, we have a mutual interest in our faith in Jesus Christ and our relationship with Jesus forms the foundation of our relationships.

Some may base relationships on personal ambition or selfishness. When we depend on another person for our security or take advantage of someone for our own personal gain, we are not building wise, lasting relationships nor are we acting in a Christian manner.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, I pray that out of Your glorious riches You strengthen me with power through Your Spirit in my inner being, so that I may be a true friend who comes alongside others without any selfish motives. Help me Lord to strengthen others as You have strengthened me, and to be able to give others wise advice that stems from You Lord. I pray that my love for my fellow believers may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that I may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11 Thank You father God for Your unfailing, deep, inseparable, and everlasting love for me and Your abundant blessings and for the riches of Your grace in my life. In Your name Jesus, my Lord and Saviour, I pray to The Father. To Jesus be the glory, the power, the dominion, the majesty, and the blessings forever and ever. Amen.

August 21 Devotion - God will strengthen you

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]

Isaiah 41:10

John 16:33

God speaks with tenderness; fear not, for I am present with you. When we are weak, He will strengthen us. When we are in need, He will help us. When we fall, He will uphold us with His right hand which is full of righteousness. In His hand, there is victory, strength, and provision. In His hand there is everything we need.

In contrast to our assumption that having peace means the absence of conflict, tribulations or distress Jesus promises that His peace becomes apparent in the very middle of trouble and conflict. Troubles remind us to ask for Jesus' peace. God's answer will not usually mean that the problem will be over, but that Christ's peace will see us through it.

I invite you to repeat the following prayer for yourself:

Abba Father, in times of trouble please remind me to ask in prayer for Jesus’ peace and give me the faith that His peace will see me through my troubles. Father God, please help me to keep my heart and mind focused on You and obeying Your word. Lord, even when things do not make sense to me and are beyond my control, remind me that nothing is beyond Your ability. Lord, I know that You are upholding me with Your righteous right hand to make everything work together for my good. Thank You Father for Your deep and everlasting love, Your abundant blessings in my life, and for the riches of Your grace upon my life. Lord God I pray to You in the name of Your precious Son; my Redeemer and Saviour; the Lord of my life, Jesus Christ. To Jesus be the power, the glory, the majesty, the blessings, and the dominion before all time and now and forevermore. Amen.
